Living in Missouri, I have seen my share of horrible stories on the news where The Humane Society has gone in and raided the local puppy mills. The stories are horrible. The animal count is high. The expenses are even higher. But, The Humane Society of St. Louis has great facilities and the local news teams are great too and keep the stories in the headlines....so there is usually a significant outpouring of money and many people ready to adopt when the animals have been healed as much as they can be.
Unfortunately, not all animals shelters are ready for such an influx of animals. Such as the case of Everett, Washington.
Here is their story:
A ring of puppy mills near Everett, Washington was busted about a couple of days ago and nearly six hundred dogs were rescued.
Most of the dogs are pregnant and the rescuers estimate that within three weeks the total of dogs will rise to two thousand.
All puppy mills are horrible but these were particularly horrific; the dogs all needed to be bathed, shaved, de-flead, treated for pee burns and other injuries, fed and housed. The Everett dog shelter is overwhelmed in every way.
The first puppy mill was a house; the clue was the stink of feces which could be smelled clear out on the street. Inside over one hundred and fifty dogs lived crammed into little carrying cases, sometimes so many dogs per box that they couldn't turn around. One carry case held a doberman and a black lab. Most of the dogs are little breeds--pugs, chihuahuas, rat terriers-- but all were imprisoned so that they could barely move. Most of the carry boxes were jammed into the attic of the house. Also rescued were some cats and a parrot. There were seven dead dogs on the premises.
Most of the dogs have burns from exposure to their pee. Some are infected with a serious contagious intestinal virus. Rescuers spent hours and hours washing their pee stained and matted fur.
In addition to all of this two other mills were busted in the last couple days. There are so many rescued animals that the overflow is being housed at the Skagit County Fairgrounds.
The Everett shelter is begging people to provide foster homes for the dogs. If you can't do that, money is also desperately needed: the expense for caring for all of these dogs is going to overwhelm the shelter.
Here is more of the story (including some pictures) as told by the local news station Komo News.
So, in summary, I'm asking for your help.
This is a small shelter that has become overwhelmed. I could not find an online way to send them money. I'm hoping with all the publicity they are now getting that they will come up with a way for people to do that soon.
Here is the link for Everett Animal Shelter. There is an address where you can send money.
If you live in the area, you can take them supplies or foster a pet.
I also thought of a way to help them in the long run......it's the Animal Shelter Contest where the winner gets $10,000.
Please help any way you can.....these shelters are all we have to protect these animals from stupid thoughtless humans.

This happened in the area we're from, Mount Vernon Washington in Skagit County.
My husband was there last weekend and said the outpouring of support for these dogs is
u n b e l i e v a b l e.
People from all over are donating time, money and food.
Such a heartbreaking story.
That is just horrible, I don't understand these people. Dogs are like humans to me, they are the sweetest animals ever and to do this to them is despicable. Thanks for sharing.
You know, some day Z's gonna be so proud of His Mommy the Activist! I clicked for you and for all those poor puppies. They just busted a puppy mill in my area...more than 200 daschunds. So sad...
What a great post for bringing awareness!
At first I was wondering, what is a "puppy mill", I never hard of that before, but I get the idea. Some people are just plain whacko. That type of cruelty is the base of mean.

OMG that is so sad. I really don't understand how people can do this.
