Australia is one of the countries I have listed on my "bucket list" that I want to visit. The wildlife there is the main reason why. Steve Irwin sold me on that a long time ago.
Sam, the badly burned koala who has become a symbol of the deadly fires, being given a drink of water by Country Fire Authority volunteer fire fighter Dave Tree. She is currently recovering at the Southern Ash Wildlife Centre near Melbourne.
The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) has been asked for its expert assistance, and is on the scene working to assist people and animals in need. The team arrived on the scene on February 10, and has hit the ground running by helping local wildlife carers with search and rescue operations, providing treatment, food and vet supplies.
Working alongside local group Help for Wildlife, the IFAW team has already treated a variety of animals ranging from horses, dogs and goats to koalas, wallabies, a lyrebird and even a dingo.
As well as on-the-ground support, IFAW has provided immediate assistance through emergency grants to help volunteers operate in the disaster area, conduct search and rescue, and coordinate food supplies for the animals that escaped the fires but are now without a food source.
