Another Weekend down the crapper.....

So, about 3 weeks ago I finally got the building repair portion settled with State Farm. So, that meant I could hire a contractor and get to work. That same week his people got EVERYTHING out of my house that was to be cleaned and took it away. Everything else....went in the trash to be replaced by State Farm. This included even my kitchen cabinets....which I guess is kind of cool.
Anyway, the week after that they scrubbed my house down from ceiling to walls to floors to get rid of the all the blackness. They ripped up my carpet (YAAAAY) and threw that out. They removed the dining room walls that burned and the ceiling too. They also removed all of the insulation up in the attic.
Last week they put Killz on all the ceilings and walls. Zander's mural is gone - apparently that took 4 coats of Killz. Then they painted all of my ceilings white (satin finish, because I do NOT let flat paint in my house - it looks like dry skin). Then they painted one wall in my bedroom before they decided to call it a day Friday afternoon. I think that was so they could finally paint something with some color.
I had to bowl Friday night so I had some time to kill after work before bowling started. I went over to my house to get my mail and thought I would go in the basement and maybe watch something I had tivo'd.
Hmmmm.....there was no electricity!!!
I was a bit ticked off that they would shut it all off because I was thinking of how many shows my tivo had missed depending on how long they had been doing this. For some reason, I thought maybe they were doing it since they had tore out some walls and ceilings so maybe there was some issue with that and the electricity. So, I went on to bowling and didn't think much more about it.
Saturday afternoon I was driving somewhere and it hit me......OH CRAP!!!! It's been raining in St. Louis all week!!! My sump pump is OFF!!!
Right about then, my dad called me. He had gone up to my house to mow....trying to get it between rain showers. I asked about the sump pump....the water was getting full in the bucket...but not overflowing. However, my basement smelled like death because all of the meat in my freezer had thawed and become rancid!!!
So....I called my contractor....yeah dude.....sorry to bother you on the weekend....but my house is about to flood and it smells like dead bodies in my freezer. Care to explain?
He explains that his guys had come in one day and found the electricity off.....so they thought we wanted to keep it off. So, they would turn it on during the day....and turn it off when they left at night. I told him we had not come in and turned off the electricity. Why in the name of Sweet Baby Jesus would we do a stupid thing like that?
My tivo is not working.
My sump pump would not be working.
My freezer would not be working (ever, because they had unplugged it too?????)
His guys have now tracked a crap load of dirt and insulation into my basement on that new carpet....that since the fire had NOT been damaged.
There are about 6 trashbags of trash sitting in my back yard. Are they getting rid of that or do they want me to set it out?
And, I noticed the painter painted over one of my light covers? That is also a big no no with me. I can't stand it when people do that? Are you telling me you can't take a screw or 2 out of something so that you don't get paint on it? That's just lazy.
Anyway, I digress....Chad, my contractor said they would pay for my rotten food and would clean that out. He said that his guys had made sure that the breaker for the sump pump was on so that would be functioning. Well, yes and no....my dad found that the switch for the sump pump was on.....but the main switch to my box was off.....so no....it wasn't working.
While I was at my house Saturday, my neighbor Michele told me that another neighbor had called the police because the workmen had left for the day one day and left my garage door up. My garage has my stove, my dishwasher and a bunch of other stuff stored in it right now. Neither neighbor could figure out how to shut the door....so an officer came and shut it by dismantling something so that when my dad turned the electricity back on....the garage door opener didn't work. Not a big deal, he fixed it and at least my neighbors are looking out for me and my stuff. That's good to know.
So, I was actually nice to the contractor on the phone. I really do like him. I will be calling him Monday morning to fill him in on everything. He doesn't know about all of this yet. I brought up the messy basement and the rancid meat. But he still thinks the sump pump was on.....I found out about the rest of the stuff after I had already talked to him. I'll fill him in and then I'll just have to keep a closer eye on my house....stop in on his workers every once in awhile. I'll let him know my neighbors are watching too....they are super ninja spies.
Ok, I know this post was all over the place.....that just seems how my weekend was.
On another note...Z and I are feeling better finally.
I started exercising over the weekend and will eat better this week (I don't know if I said that last part to tell you or to get it through my thick head that I better eat better this week).
Maybe tomorrow I'll post something less random.....probably not!

I feel so bad for you being out of the house and now all this extra crap. But at least your neighbors are good people. Let's hope these workers finish up soon!
