My Dad was raised Pentecostal.....and God bless him....he did try with me and my sister! But, it was just too strict.....and well, I guess we really don't like to be told what to do.
I won't get into too much detail....because some of it really gets me fired up. I don't want to bash religion as I myself am religious. I just don't believe in being so strict. I tend to think that the more strict parent's are....the more rebellion they are going to get. Not that kids don't need structure....but their needs to be a balance.
Anyhoo....I digress.
So, my story begins when I was about 12 or 13. I wanted my ears pierced sooo bad. I don't know why, probably because my friend's had theirs pierced. But this was against our religion. My mom didn't really care one way or the other. But my Dad was forbidding it!
I don't know how it is now, but then you had to have parental consent. My sister was older than I was, but the piercing people wouldn't accept her consent.
I just happened to be at the mall one day when my friend, April, and her mom were there. My sister and I convinced her mom to pretend to be my mom and I got my ears pierced!
(I remember calling my mom at home to make sure it was ok - she was ok with me getting them pierced, she just didn't want to be the one to take me to do it.)
Voila!
It took my dad a whole 2 days to even notice.....but when he did....he wouldn't even look at me or talk to me for 1 whole day!
Well, he got over it. Do you want to know how big of a deal it was?
Let's see...since then I've had 2 more piercings in each ear...and another one on the top of my ear in the cartilage....oh, and there is that belly button piercing I got too!
And 3 tattoos later we're all on speaking terms! Its all good!
My first tattoo was of Odie - of Garfield and Odie. I cannot show a picture of him but if I were to ever wear a bikini again (probably not) then he would be peaking over the top of the bottom part of the bikini.
The second tattoo I got was a barbed wire around one of my toes to look like a toe ring. This was the most painful, but I think its my favorite. Sorry, I couldn't get a good picture of it.
The last one I got on a trip to Miami. It is on the small of my back and is a cross that is colored to look like a yin yang.
(The top part is colored white, but its hard to see since my skin is so pale and vampiric)
There really isn't a huge moral to this story......except to say to Zander that I know you are going to do weird things to your hair....wear weird clothes.....maybe some piercings or whatnot. I will try and go with the flow. Mind you, I will be taking lots of pictures to document all of these things.
I'm not going to stress this small stuff so long as it doesn't hurt you, Z, or anyone else.
That's all I really care about.

I agree.... remind me of this when they are 12 and 14 ok
I have always chosen my battles carefully...we have had some! I made them wait until 18 for a tattoo and neither boy did...my daughter and I have the smae tattoo now!
I was raised in a really strict house and I was a total good girl. I completely yearn to rebel but I'm afraid I may have missed my window ;(
Ahhh yeah.
I have three tattoo that I hate, and Wendy has three that she loves.
Thats the difference between doing something to prove that you can and doing something because it makes you happy!
I love these letters to Z!
I agree! Although, my son is still asking to get his ear pierced. I said SURE! As soon as he's 18! LOL He turns 16 next month.
Hey, I was sneaky like that, too! Got my ears pierced w/o the parentals' permission, and got a tatoo, too...But when I "grew up," I had the tat removed. Dermabrasion works wonders!
I have the opposite thing going on over here. My mother had tattoos and piercings, and I despise them.
Great post! I have a tattoo on my back, too. It hurt and I was a big baby. Would you believe my younger sister and mom got their tattoos before me?! LOL I had 5 regular ear piercings and one in the top part...but now I am down to 3 in each ear. My sister? Tongue, nipple, and belly button. I think they are all gone now too. I couldn't do the tongue! Ouch!!
