I was worried I wouldn't have any real stories to put in the blog this weekend. Well, I needn't worry..... Here goes...
I was leaving my parent's house Saturday night. Zander was getting tired so I was going to go home and put him to bed. Well, he was crabby and only wanted Grandma. She carried him out to the car while I made like a pack mule and carried all of our crap out.
I have this habit of always locking the door behind me.
I also have another habit....I lose keys.
So, you're thinking "Oh, Karla lost her keys." Well, just the key to my parent's house. (This happens when your child is sleeping in the car on a previous occasion, you just need to run in really quick to get something, and you don't want to wake your child. So, you take just that key off your key ring so the car radio and everything is still playing....but then you can't ever remember what you did with that key). So, now my mom can't get back into the house. And I don't have the key.
Well, its no big deal, right? My Dad is in the house....he'll open the door. Slight problem with that. He went upstairs to watch tv.
He is totally deaf in one ear and partially deaf in the other, and what he can hear, he usually ignores.
We beat on the front door, the back door and the basement door.
I threw rocks at the bedroom window....then I realized he was in the other bedroom (see, I've got my "mommy brain" constantly working against me).
So I tried to throw rocks at the other bedroom window...it was harder though because that is the side of the house where the covered porch is and so I had to get the rocks over the roof and I'm no pitcher!
I then honked his truck horn and then my Jeep horn.
I screamed until Zander cried because I was so loud.
My mom had been banging on the door so long her knuckles were numb.
Oh, I had my cell phone and had been calling the house phone AND his cell phone too. I let the house phone ring for sooo long that it actually turned on the answering machine that Zander had turned off earlier. But, the ringers were turned off on the phones upstairs because that is where the kids take naps.
Of course the only neighbors with a spare key weren't home either.
The lock on the basement door had broken a few months ago, so it was deadbolted with no key.
I eventually called Kim to come with a key.....she was lives about 20 minutes away. After her and John got done laughing at us.....they were on their way.
My mom kept telling me to take Zander home...but I couldn't leave her....after all, I was the one who had locked her out. This was like the "Perfect Storm" version of being locked out.
So, I figured my Dad was watching a western, because, uh, that is the ONLY thing he ever watches. The show is usually not as loud as the commercials. So, I figured I had to keep making a bunch of noise and hope I got his attention right before a gun fight or something....its usually quiet then. That's when you have a drunk guy yelling at an empty building for so and so to come out....while meanwhile, so and so and his posse are surrounding the drunk guy. You've seen one western, you've seen them all.
So, I kicked at the back door. I kept kicking at it....not hard enough to knock it down, but just to make noise.
FINALLY, he pops his head around the corner from the steps and sees Mom, Z and me standing on the back porch looking through the glass at him. And still he stands there and says "What are you guys doing?"
At that point my mom and I were yelling...I don't remember what we said. This is where it gets to be like a "Three Stooges" episode.
He says "Why didn't you call me? I had my phone in my pocket." He pulls his cell phone (yes, the same one I called) out of his chest pocket.
My mom says "How many missed calls do you have?" Uh, 4.
So, later I find out he thinks that if you turn the volume down on your cell phone, the phone will vibrate. I had to explain to him that is not how it works (and then later I set his phone up to do just that).
He was mad because the ringers on the phones were turned off upstairs. I was mad because they didn't have spare house keys in their garage (which now has an garage door opener with a keypad on it, so there should be no excuses for that). And mom was mad because she still had to bake a pie.
He said he did hear us beating on something once, but he thought Mom was just hammering on something loudly because she was mad at him for not doing work around the house. Ok, mom doesn't use tools or fix things, so not sure why he thought that after over 40+ years of marriage, she would suddenly pick up that habit.
I had to call Kim and John and tell them they didn't have to come after all, although they were about halfway there. Kim was laughing so hard when I told her all the happenings that John could hardly understand her when she relayed the story to him. I thought she was going to wet herself.
All in all, we were outside for 40 minutes trying to get in.
Lesson learned. Mom turned the ringers on upstairs (although, come to find out Dad's ringer was on!), Dad's cell phone will vibrate now, and next time we go to the auto store we will be getting several spare house keys.

LOL!!! Trying to laugh quietly here, so as not to wake the hubby up!!
I have spare keys placed in strategic places, as I'm always losing my keys.
We've got spare keys hidden in so many places on the off chance this event happens. Turns out my oldest son just pops a screen in the pool room and lets himself in that way, I had no idea we were so break-in-able.
Happy day to you! Enjoy the warm glow of the SITS sunshine. Well deserved ;)
How funny that he thought your mom was hammering something!! I don't think I've ever been locked out... sounds miserable... but good blog fodder!!
Happy SITS day!
"And mom was mad because she still had to bake a pie."
That's the kicker! You are so funny. :)
Yay! My girl is featured today!!! Congrats because you deserve lots of readers.
Spare keys are something that I definitely need. I'll put them on the list. Thanks for the reminder!
Congrats on being the Featured Blogger today! :)
I live in constant fear of locking myself in or out of something (car, house) without having my keys. I have my keys on a wristband, even. The thought is always in the back of my mind that if I did ever lock myself out, we did a "key exchange" years ago with some of the neighbors, so as long as someone's home over there, I could get back in to our house... Don't know what'll happen if I ever do lock myself out AND the neighbors aren't home. (My hubby works about 40 minutes away and would probably not be able to trek back home just to let me in...)
This story was a great laugh to get my day started! Off to poke around your archives now - Cheers!
That is soo soo funny. Everything made me laugh because it all played out in my head!
Enjoy being SITS Queen for the day! Like I tell everyone, you won't know what hit you.
The thought of being locked out is horrible. Lucky for you your dad was there. Soon after my son was born I took him for a walk and inadvertently left the keys in the house. We were new to the neighborhood and it was sweltering hot. I had to knock on a door to get refuge until the
Oh, wow - that sounds so much like something I'd do!!
Happy SITS day. :)
You poor woman. I've done that before. Not so much fun! Thanks for a good laugh though!
*Congrats on your SITS feature!
The only time I've locked myself out of a house was when I was babysitting. I don't like back doors that automatically lock. Fortunately, the neighbor had a key and it took us about 3 minutes to get back in the house.
Oh that's hilarious! I'm sure it wasn't too funny for you then :)
Congrats on your SITS day!
So glad you are having a SITS day! That sounds like something that would happen to me, only it would be me and my dad and my mom would be the one inside ignoring us!!
UMMM...Did you steal my dad?!!
HAPPY SITSDAY!!!!!!
I personally am SO paranoid about someone coming into the house that I have ONE set of keys and that's it. Of course I live in an apartment so if I lock myself out, I just go get them... but...
Your family sounds SO much like mine! What a HOOT!! I just would have LOVED to see your dad's face when he saw the 4 missed calls!
I do, kinda feel sorry for Dad! I bet he felt bad...congrats on SITS Day!
That bit about the Westerns was dead on!... The same goes for any kind of War movie, my husband watches both genre and I can scarcely get through the noise until the inevitable lull... 30 seconds of lull time and it's back to the guns and cannons rattling the walls again... Give me a nice quiet episode of House Hunters any time!
*giggles*
Happy SITS Day!
That sounds just about like my dad! If he's watching TV he most likely doesn't have his hearing aids in, so it is turned WAY UP!! He wouldn't be able to hear anything else either. He actually has Caller ID that pops up onto his TV--something else you may want to look into. ;)
Congrats on your SITS day.
I thought episodes like that only happened with my family. Lorelai locked my keys in the trunk of the car once when the whole family was shopping...Hank didn't have his keys with him. Our friends had to break into our house, get the spare and drive 25 miles to the mall to bring them to us. Good friends...truly good!
That is hilarious. I can just see you all standing there yelling at him. We have had some of the same type of adventures with my dad. Dads, you just gotta love them.
Oh good grief ya gotta love those dads. Life must be peachy when you get to be so oblivious to the rest of the world! Happy SITS Day!!
omgosh, this was so funny! i think I'm the only one who has not locked herself out of the house but that's because I'm a freak of nature and have keys hidden all over the place. I just have to remember where they are.
This exact scenario sounds just like something that would happen to me. It's funny when it's coming from someone elses perspective, though :)
Have a great SITS day!
Funny! It sounds as if our parents would be perfect friends for each other.
HAHA your poor dad! Ok ok ... not so much! ;)
Congratz on being today's SITS girl ;)
Happy SITS day! Great story...since I am the owner of a mom-brain myself, I can totally relate:)
This story sound all to familiar.
I hate being locked out & especially when you have someone inside to let you in & they can't hear you or they ignore you.
I broke a side light window by our front door once because I had knocked & pounded so long my hands hurt so I started kicking the window to get some ones attention.
Been there done that. I also hide space keys outside. Sadly they are also behind my locked gate! I just realized that. _ mental list _ must move key..........
~j~
That sounds about right! :) For us...it was 2 hours and $150 later...
Your poor dad. And yes...spare keys are a very good thing.
Happy SITS Day!
Happy SITS day to you! Congrats on being Saucy. This post is so funny. I can see me *ahem*, I mean you, doing this. Really, this is just like something I would do, these day.
Happy SITS Day! What a great story! I needed that hearty laugh this morning!
I just feel so good that I'm not the only one that this stuff happens too. lolol
SO funny! Kudos on the Saucy-ness ;)
Oh man - what a production!!! I'm super forgetful and I'm constantly losing keys, cell phone, etc. so I completely understand.
Congrats on your SITS day!
What a funny story to start my Monday.
Congrats on your SITS debut!
those garage door keypads are the only thing that have kept me from being in this situation... but don't get me started on locking my keys in my car!!! Funny story. Enjoy your SITS feature.
Hilarious.......from my side. It wouldn't have been so funny had I been hammering on that door. I had some friends who lost their house key while on vacation. When they returned home they tried to wake up their neighbors with the spare key. Only problem was that the neighbors slept with fans and white noise things on so they didn't hear them. My friends slept in the car all night. They learned a lesson, too! :)
LOL. I imagine you were SO frustrated, but that is hilarious. Thank goodness it didn't start raining or something. ;)
HAPPY SITS DAY!!! LOL What a story. I have only a house key to my parents house and it's always on my key ring but I have one of those belt loop thingies that I can take that key ring off if I need to leave the car for any reason. Thanks for sharing that it was funny.

PLEASE tell me you actually DID get spare keys? Everytime this stuff happens to me (and yea, it happens more than I'd like), I say that and then...poof I forget. Until it happens again.
LOVED the way you wrote this out. I could see it all!!
Congrats on your SITS day!!
Man, these types of events get me so frustrated! I feel for you!
I love your blog design and all the stripes on the side. Nice colors!
Congrats on your SITS day in the sun!
Yeah for you!!! Happy SITS day...Enjoy your comment love!!
Days/events like these just seem to snowball don't they. I can just feel the frustration!
I think I just laughed about 45 situps worth :)!
Loved this story--so real life! And the way you told it was perfect.
ENJOY your SITS day!
Wow! Now I don't feel quite so bad about all the times I've lost my keys or locked them in somewhere! Glad you finally got in!
I was r4eading other comments and how people have spare keys everywhere, and I was feeling kind of nervous because we don't. Then I realized that we have a key pad on the outside of the garage that opens the garage door, so we can always go in that way. As far as your story goes, man I can only imagine how frustrating that might have been. I don't hear my cell phone sometimes either if thats any consolation. Lol!
That is such an awesome story!! I can totally relate as that sounds like something I would do also. Thanks for the laugh this afternoon!!!
Here from SITS...don't you love how your dad assumed your mom was mad and banging on stuff?!
still laughing!
What a crazy adventure! I admit I've locked myself out on occasion, but I've never locked my mother out, that's just too funny!
Oh man...when it rains, it pours.... Come to think of it, that's probably what would have happened next...
Sounds like something Kyra would do- I had to go pick her and Ian up today because Aaron took her car keys to work. She is always losing keys (and phones, and purses, and...) I don't have that problem with 5 dogs we don't bother locking the doors- plus there are several different schedules, unless we are going to something together usually at least one of us is home.
Congrats being featured on SITS.
I hate it when I lock myself out of things. I don't do it often but when I do it's like this - perfectly done.
Great story. I've actually locked myself out of the front and back doors multiple times. Luckily my mother-in-law has a spare, but only after the third time it happened to me.
That is so funny. I think I would of killed my father. lol But then I guess you were the one whom was relaly at fault!! lol
That is hilarious!!!
Funny stuff!
It reminds me of the time we locked ourselves out and my poor hubby had to go up in the attic and get in.
Congrats on your SITS feature!
Congrats on your SITS day!!!!
That was a great story. I would have a hard time with all of that because I would be laughing so hard!!!!
Thanks for sharing....
That rivals the time I locked my 18month old in the car at the drop off lane at the airport. I left the car running and was sending off my MIL. It was rather chilly as it was December in SD and I left the heat on in the car for my son. The security guard kept coming over to us saying, "You're going to have to move your car." We had to call a locksmith. $50 later........
Oh man...that was a great story. I've had things like that happen to me before!
Congrats on being featured.
How funny! How many neighbors came out wondering what was going on? lol
Oh my gosh your Dad is hilarious! At least it wasn't a huge emergency!! :)
This is like sitcom comedy live in action! Ain't life just funny after the fact?! Lol!
I have locked my keys in the car - at a gas station... in the ghetto.
In the ghetto - the police don't come to help you!
LOL! Your dad is a character! Glad your mom was able to get back in her house.
You know I think all men are slightly deaf....or at least pretend to be. This is really funny, though. I can see this happening at my parents' house, although with them it'd be a lot of cussing and yelling...not funny.
Sitsta!!!!!!!! This was absolutely hysterical, and the kind of situation I could see me and my sister getting into! My first time here, but something tells me I'll be backkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk!
Justine :o )
HILARIOUS!!!!! I'd love to know what the neighbors werer thinking!!!
We have to have spare keys everywhere! My daughter just started locking all the doors.
Congrats on SITS
I could really feel your frustration! Aaaaaagggghhhh! I hate those situations.
What a crazy night! Your dad sounds hysterical. I think my dad is getting a little hard of hearing seeing as how the volume on the tv is twice as loud as it used to be and we have to yell at him to turn it down. He must go into a trance watching those westerns!
And this is the story of my life. One thing after another. :)
I promise, it's not only you!
This story was funny, but your telling made it hysterical! I guess if you can't laugh at these kinds of things you have to cry.
Oooo rough day! I totally get it with the dad not hearing things that a ummm normal person would. And in losing things. (I have a lovely story about losing keys myself!)
Here's hoping your SITS day was more fun!
I have such an issue with losing my keys, I actually had to hunt them down this weekend. I stranded myself at home cause I left them in my husbands car and he left for work...
That whole story was hilarious! Talk about a sequence of events, lol. Glad it all worked out.
I think it is called the tricke effect and only happens when the baby is asleep and your dad is partially deaf. Thanks for cracking me up
I can so relate to this post. I have lost keys and locked myself out of my car/house so many times. I now have several keys to everything, everywhere.
Been there, SISTA! Glad it all worked out (and gave you some blog material, too!) :)
I wonder how we have the same dad? Between this episode and him calling and asking why you are answering Kim's phone, I believe we may be somehow related...
What an adventure! It's surprising you didn't have a crowd of neighbors gathered around the house by the time your dad got to the door. I'm glad it all worked out in the end!
So nice to know that I'm not the only one who would be stuck in a situation like that!
Congrats on your SITS day!
Congratulations on being the featured SITSta today!
I loved your story, glad to know I'm not the only one who has the crazy little family drama stories!
I wanted to thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment about my son's accident, I really appreciated it! I posted some good news today if you have some time to stop by again. I know how busy you are today, now that you're a SITS CELEBRITY!LOL! ENJOY THE SPOTLIGHT...YOU DESERVE IT!
Congrats on your Sits love today! I love this story, it is so something that I would do! Glad ti all worked out and maybe it will be a lesson learned!
I'm running a day behind, but wanted to say congrats on your SITS day! The residual comments last for a few days, so that's nice. Love this story! It reminds me of the time I locked my kids & I out of our new car. Glad you guys made it into the house!
We always leave one window unlocked JUST IN CASE! Too funny. Remids me of the 3 stooges fo sho!
Oh my goodness. Funny to look back on....aggravating in the monment.
Ugh- your dad sounds familiar... makes me mad just thinking about it. ;)
Two words - Oy Vey!!!!
And one more - congrats!!!!!
Happy SITS DAY!
Congrats on being the SITS girl for today!
That was a hilarious story...and totally something I would do!! I loved my old house, because I could only lock the door from the outside with the key. Not once did I lock myself out! :)
Off to read the other 2 blogs!
