Welcome all ye people from Blog Around The World!!! Its so nice of you to stop by. Missouri, the Show Me state, is the feature state of the day....and that is certainly my neck of the woods! More precisely, St. Louis is my neck of the woods. I've lived here all of my life and it will probably always be home.
St. Louis is nice because its big enough to have lots of things to do and small enough to not be overcrowded.
It is home to Rams Football, Cardinals Baseball and Blues Hockey. (And no, my favorite Cardinal is not Albert Pujols.....it is Yadier Molina - best catcher in the Midwest - maybe the whole world!!!! BWAAAHAAAHAHAHAHA)
We also have the Arch - the Gateway to the West!
(ETA:) And YES, you can go up in it! There is also a museum in the bottom of the Arch (however I didn't really find interesting)
We're proud of our heritage of Blues music.....but probably even more proud to be the Home of Budweiser, as Anheuser Busch's headquarters is here (well, for now anyway). Which also means we have Grant's Farm (as Anheuser Busch owns this too) - this is a sprawling property with plentiful wildlife where General Grant's home is. It's like a HUGE petting zoo with free beer at the end of your tour!
Also, these beauties (below) can be found at Grant's Farm, as well as, the Budweiser Brewery where you can take a tour!

When in St. Louis you have try the toasted ravs (from anywhere on The Hill) and you must stop at Ted Drewes for the frozen custard - its a tradition! It is also home to extreme humidity and heat in the summer, extreme cold in the winter and apparently a bajillion mosquitoes!
In honor of Missouri's feature today I wanted to post a "Visitor's Guide to Driving in St. Louis". I did not write this, I got in an email a long time ago and was waiting for the perfect time to pull it out. It is totally true.
The morning rush hour is from 6:00 to 10:00 AM.
The evening rush hour is from 3:00 to 7:00 PM.
Friday's rush hour starts Thursday morning.
Gravois Road can only be pronounced by a native.
Ditto for Spoede and Chouteau.
Highway 40 is the same as Interstate 64 through the middle of St.Louis. Most native St. Louisans do not even know what I-64 is, much less it's old name, "The Daniel Boone Expressway."
Construction on Highways 40, 64, 70, 255, 270, 44, 55 and 170 is a way of life, and a permanent form of entertainment.
The Page Avenue extension and Airport expansion projects took over 20 years to get approved and St. Louisans lost track of how many political figures claimed them as their own ideas.
A St. Louisan from South County has never been to North County and vice versa.
West County has everything delivered.
Stop signs are suggestions.
Stoplights do not turn green for waiting drivers until the car in front has already started moving. The line of waiting cars therefore "caterpillar" their way across the intersection.
YIELD signs are for decoration only. No native St. Louisan will ever grasp the concept.
There are 2 exits on Highway 40 for Clayton Road and 2 for Big Bend.
Laclede Station Road mysteriously changes names as you cross intersections.
As do McCausland, Lindbergh, Watson, Reavis Barracks, Fee Fee, McKnight, Airport Road, Midland, Olive, Clarkson and Telegraph.
You can go all four directions on Highway 270: North and South in West County , East and West in South County , and East and West in North County. I-270 turns into I-255 in South County for no apparent reason. Confused? So are the St. Louis drivers.
The main highway going from St. Louis to Illinois (which most native St. Louisans do not acknowledge exists) is called "The Poplar Street Bridge ". However, the bridge does NOT convey Poplar Street , but rather Highway 40, across the Mississippi. Poplar is a street near the bridge on the St. Louis side. Mapmakers finally had to include the nickname on their products in the 1980s to end the confusion.
Most municipalities have their own snow removal contracts so it's not uncommon to drive down a road in winter and have one block plowed, the next salted, the next piled with snow and the last partially cleared by residents wanting to get out of their driveways.
The street, Lindbergh, belongs to every neighborhood except Kirkwood, who had the nerve to creatively change the name to ' Kirkwood Road '.
Any car parked longer than 4 hours in the city, is considered a parts store.
Highway 270 is our daily version of the NASCAR circuit.
Lambert Field and St. Louis International Airport really are the same place. The East Terminal, however, is a different place.
The outer belt is Highway 270 which turns into Highway 255 in South County .The inner belt is Highway 170 and if it's a 3XX number it's an alternate outer belt.
If you need directions to O'Fallon, make sure to specify Illinois or Missouri .
The City of Ballwin actually proposed that drivers use connecting strip mall parking lots to get from place to place rather than drive on Manchester Road to cut the traffic on Manchester Road.
If it snows or rains - Stay home!!!
Thanks for stopping by today. If you haven't been to my blog before feel free to make yourself at home and look around. I hope you enjoy your stay and you're welcome back anytime!
ETA: I also forgot to say that Missouri is home to the newest American Idol winner, David Cook!!! Yep, he was home grown here in the midwest!

Well--as long as someone else is driving me around--I'd love to come and visit :)! I have always loved the St. Louis arch. Is it really that big in person?
You did a great job girl! Hope your sitemeter gets jammed!!!
Hey Karla!... Now I am getting homesick... I lived in KC for 8 years... But L O V E St. Louis...
Great post! Congrats for being featured on BATW.. : )
Sorry to say I knew very little... ok, I knew NOTHING of Missouri, so it was nice to read your post. I'll have to check out that zoo sometime!
Hey MO.
St Louis is aight, but girlfriend - you got it all WRONG about those Cards.
Course I am a Chicago girl. Shall we brawl? ;)
mmmwwwaaahahhhhh!
It's all blog love. ;)
And can that giraffe get any cuter? Oh my! I think my boys would love the Clydesdales at Grant's Farm.
My Brother in-law moved there almost a year ago & they seem to like it there.
Brother Man is obsessed with Albert Pujols. Ob.sessed.
Thanks for the warnings about driving in St. Louis. I think I'll stay away unless I am feeling very brave.
Sounds just like Wisconsin...except, our snow removal system might have you beat. We have to! We got 100 inches last winter!!! Yikes!!!
Great post! I love the "stop signs are suggestions." Hope you have a great day!
AND, Missouri has Zander!
Got a little something for you; stop by my blog when you get a chance.
Hey there!!! I've been to St. Louis several times and always have a great time!!! It's just a short 3-4 hours from me!!!! Great post!
Thanks for the tour of St. Louis! I would love to visit Grant's Farm. How great is that, lots of cute animals AND beer. I've always wanted to visit the arch, too. Can you go up in it?
Hey Karla,
Thanks for stopping by my blog yesterday.
I love this post. I remember going through Missouri on one of my cross country camping trips as a kid. I remember loving the arch. I saw the girl above asked if you can go up in the arch. i don't remember going up in it, can you??
Have a great BATW day!
Well, I Had. No. Idea! You're from my Old Stomping Grounds! Yup, a Mizzou Grad here, tried and true! In fact, my college roomie was from Kirkwood!
I have been to St. Louis for a conference and I loved the city and the public transportation...and everyone was very , very nice to me! Someday...I will return! Plus, my son-law is a Cardinal fan!
Jennifer P - Yes, the Arch is huge in person.
AIN: I love KC - home of Barbeque and great shopping!!!! Wooo Hooo!!!
Mom of 3 Boybarians reminded me to tell you all that St. Louis and Chicago are Arch enemies...get it Arch?....bad joke????
Susie....yeah, we don't usually get a lot of snow...ice however is a different story....
Lori - Yes, your correct. MO now has the cutest lil boy in the world named Zander. As luck has it, he's mine! ;)
Carabee and Kathy - Yes you can go up in the Arch. Its not as exciting as it sounds...but you are there, you might as well.
Veggie Mom - Small world! I graduated from Webster HS....Webster and Kirkwood are HUGE rivals. We play a Turkey Day game EVERY Thanksgiving to win the prized "Bell". Its a tradition that has gone on for more than 100 years.
Rhonda....yaaay....glad you like it. And your son must be so smart!!!! ;)
All of these BATW stops are awesome, thanks for being so hospitable! :D
Great tour Karla! I went to St. Louis on a high school trip and it was a blast!!
Oh Karla you know I think your great. And can I take a bus instead when I come to visit. Driving sounds terrifying.
Great tour :) Thanks for showing us all around!
Missouri sounds fun! But I am confused about the tag line "the Show Me" state. What does that mean?
I have been to the top of the arch...it was nice while up there but I got a bit claustrophobic on the ride up! I live just south of Memphis, so our team is the Redbirds, the Cardinals' AAA farm team. Both Pujols and Molina played here, I'm happy to say! : )
Thanks for the tour!
cute!! I feel like I live there... Wait, um.. :D
hope your day at work is going well, I am wiping up snot all day.. hmm.. feels the same as being there at times! Lots of crying and whining.. ya, except my kid naps!
HA! see u in the am
Cute Blog! Love the Visitor's Guide to driving there! Esp the fact that Friday's Rush Hour traffic starts Thurs morning! hahaha. Sounds like you live in a beautiful place to call home. Hope to browse around some more.
Hey Christy, Mo's motto is "The Show Me" state...I live here and I don't know why. I googled it but apparently there are several different scenarios that could possibly be the reason....who knows....who cares....should I.....maybe....I don't know.....
Thanks for the info!! I've been to St. Lou a few times, but it's been a long time. I did spend a FABULOUS 6 hours at the airport on Christmas day ALONE in 11th grade... did you know that absolutely EVERYTHING in an airport is CLOSED on Christmas day?
Congrats on your feature today in BATW!! I've been to St. Louis several times and I've gotten lost everytime!!! My fav pic of me CarGuy and SwimBoy is at the arch. It sits on my dresser and I look at it everyday. It was taken back in 1996 so it's getting pretty old!
My BF is from St. Louis! We've been there and went UP to the top of the arch, been to the brewery, YUM - and went to Purina Farms and to Maramac Cavern's - soooo cool. What a cool state! :) Thanks for the memories.
Just stopping by from BATW. I love St. Louis! It's been a few years since I've been there though. Great blog!
Hello from Ms. Oklahoma! You did a great job on your post! I love Missouri...lots to do and it looks like your family takes it all in! Your little Z is precious! Going to go take a look around the old blog if you don't mind! Don't know if you are a big Missouri college football fan..but you guys are lookin' good :)
that was just simply fun to read. every city/town has its own quirks that if you're not a native of, seems rather strange and out there. i chuckled at a few of those...
Greetings from Texas and BATW! I really enjoyed your tour. I have to say the Clydesdales are my favs.
Hey there! I lived near you for 4 years--in Columbia, to be exact. I'm a grad of the University Journalism School, and now teach little high school cherubs how to write. Thanks so much for all of the little tidbits--I love all this blog-hopping, don't you?
Hi Karla! Thanks for the great tour. I've only been to KC, and remember it being a zoo - after all it was on a Friday. I hope you are enjoying the spotlight today! Thanks for showing us around!
Greetings as I pass through while BATW!
Wow, was that driving guide confusing! I have driven in St. Louis before, but it was about 20 years ago. I do remember going down a one-way street downtown -- the wrong way! Yikes!
Stopping in from BATW, thanks for the tour :o)
Oh, what fun! I LOVE those Clydesdales--what amazing creatures! Thanks for coming to the state fair with me yesterday. Stop by again soon!
Waving hi from Colorado! Enjoyed reading your post, off to browse the rest of your blog. :) Have a great day!
38 comments, good grief, I can't read all of them!! You are such a popular missy! I got your comment on your jaw and emailed you.
So, I went up that Arch one time and it is the scariest thing in the world! I had been up the WTC 4 times prior to 9/11 and that did not scare me one bit. But that Arch! It made me feel really weird because it has uneven floor and I just felt like I was sliding!
Thanks for the handy dandy Visitor's Guide!
I have always wanted to go to St. Louis. Hopefully someday I will! Thanks for the rush hour warning. For some reason that sounds very familiar....oh ya. It's the same here!!
If I ever find myself in St Louis, I'll let my husband drive and brave the car sickness I get in the passengar seat.
Great post!
Great post, loved all the info. Hope to be able to stop by for a visit sometime when I get back to the states.
Wow! You did a great job representing MO!! I love all the sites you mentioned!
And that's so funny...my dad grew up on The Hill. I didn't know they still called it that!
I'm off to check out your site more!
My dad and I skirted St. Louis on a drive from Atlanta to Seattle when i was 17. I remember him warning me as I was driving and just before he fell asleep, not to get off the freeway anywhere in St. Louis!!
Now I understand why!
How fun. I hope you enjoy your BATW day!
Wow - this was so fun and informative.
Great job, Karla!
I love your Traffic Info. I understood it all! I wonder if we're the only place in the world with a North County, South County, and West County. And we know precisely where those areas are and 'what' they mean --- (i.e. delivery in the west!) Too cute!
~Fellow St. Louisan, Karin
Crikey, that is one hellofa guide. Feel like I've been there and bought the t-shirt! Excellent stuff.
Just wanted to say thank you so very much for visiting today - it was lovely to meet you and take your magical mystery tour!
thanks for giving me the downlow on how to get around...
Thanks for all the fun info!
Happy BATW day! I have been to MO before for a wedding and found it surprisingly similar to NC where I live.
Heat - check
Humidity - check
Bajillions of mosquitoes - check
Yep, eerily similar.
Does it bother you when people pronounce Missour-ee Missour-ah? Or is it really pronounced Missour-ah? Just a question. My friend from Missour-ee says its pronounced Missour-ee. Anywho, I'll have you chauffer(sp?) me when I come what with all the regulations and such. I enjoyed looking around and Oh, I did the C 25K plan last winter and ran my first 5K in April. Its a great training plan, stick with it, but make sure you have yourself some good running shoes, especially if you have shin issues.
Hi there! I have family in St. Louis...and in Perryville and in Cape. And your traffic rules, they apply to Atlanta. Except re-name all your street Peachtree...
I live in Paola, KS which is south of KC. Like I said, about 3-4 hours from ya :) I hope it doesn't rain here all weekend, we have a big festival that is completely outside!!! EEK keep the rain there ;)
Now I understand the reason I always get lost in St. Louis. Have tried to drive through it at least four times when we lived in GA. Traveled between Ga. and Wa. for four years while my husband attended college in Ga.
I am very happy to know it was not my fault I was always lost. This was in an era before GPS
Thanks for the tour of St. Louis. I have only visited once but had a good time.
Pardon my ignorance here but I'm not a native English speaker (or writer)...
What does "neck of the woods" mean? Some idiom that means place of residence, abode, domicile?
What does ETA mean? That to me means Expected Time of Arrival. Am I missing something here?
Hope to get up the Arch someday!
I'm glad I don't drive. :# Yet.
Thanks for letting us into your home of Missouri.
From Texas here! Thanks for the tour! I've been to St. Louis. And went in the arch!
Great job on being a tour guide today! I think I would hire a driver to take me around though...I'm a little scared!
I LOVE David Cook!! ;)
Holy Cow Sister...Z's house is full today! I don't know which one said it, but I agree, Mo. has Zander so it can't get any better.
I bought the Host today....jealous??? hahahahha, just kidding.
I have never been to Missouri but you have totally convinced me...do you have room for me at your place???
Stopping by on my tour. Love your blog and all the pictues. Chat later!
What a cool post! I've never been to Missouri, but there certainly are plenty of attractions to entertain me if I ever make it there:)
Very beautiful state... I have to admit! I have 2 sisters who both ended up there, even though we're all 100% Canadian!!
Kia Ora
Wow, that's a lot of facts about SL. Loved the post and you blog - will be back.
Thanks for the tour of St. Louis. I had a boss who was from there, and he really missed it. He had lots of great things to say about it.
